Nizhny Novgorod

The next stop of my trip was Nizhny Novgorod.  I took a train from downtown Kazan to the airport (only $.70) & arrived 30 minutes later.  When I checked in for my flight I found out that I misread the luggage restrictions for my ticket and it was 10kg for all my luggage including carryon bags.  I thought it applied only to checked luggage.  My bags weighed 16kg not including the heavier things that I stuffed in my jacket.  The airline check in guy was very nice & said he would let it slide.

The flight was pretty routine & 50 minutes later I was in Nizhny Novgorod.  Unfortunately the free airport wifi didn't work for me, so I couldn't use Uber & had to pay the tourist taxi rate of $15 which is still isn't bad for a 40 minute ride.  I had another free stay at a Hilton for 3 nights which included a free breakfast.  The hotel was really nice, although it was outside the tourist area.

Not the most inspiring view from my room

The big tourist area is along the river which has an old fortress, some nice churches, and a cool cable car ride. The fortress was interesting, but I didn't go inside to see any of the museums.  They did have a WWII memorial which had some school kids learning how to march nearby it.

I did a lot of walking around town & noticed a wedding party nearby with people celebrating.  About 30 minutes later on the main street with tourists, a lone car comes down the street at a high rate of speed smoking it's tires & driving wildly, then it was followed by another car doing the same.  People looked pretty concerned at what these guys were doing.  I then remembered I saw these same cars at the wedding celebration.

I did the cable car on my 2nd day which was pretty good especially for just $3 roundtrip.  I also did a long walk along the river & a pedestrian only shopping street.  I must have walked 5-6 miles that day.  There was not much in the way of restaurants where I was staying, so I went out for pizza since that was about the only thing I could find.

Items prohibited from the cable car

Overall my visit to Nizhny Novgorod was ok, I think there is more to do when the weather is warmer.  My next stop is Moscow which is a 4 hour train ride from Nizhny Novgorod.  Here are few more photos from my visit.
